Värmland is the land of shimmering lakes. And it’s not just the sunlight dancing on the water’s surface. In its lakes and streams you’ll see the silver flashes of countless fish species. Värmland is truly a land of water and fishing — a region with endless opportunities for the adventurous angler.

Whether you are an experienced fisherman or simply enjoy spending time in nature, the waters around Storfors offer a varied and rewarding fishing experience throughout the year.

What kind of fish can you catch? When, where and how?

Pike fishing in Sweden

Pike

One of the most sought-after fish among anglers is the pike. If pike fishing is your passion, then Värmland is the place to be. Not only are pike abundant here, they also grow big. Every year, numerous “crocodiles” weighing over 10 kg are caught, and almost every year a true “monster” exceeding 15 kg is landed.

Pike fishing is at its best in spring and autumn. However, in deep and cold lakes, pike can also be found during summer, especially at dawn and at night. A particularly good period is just after the spawning season, when pike actively feed.
When pike move into shallow waters, bait casting with artificial lures or angling with baitfish are effective techniques. If the fish go deeper, trolling with large wobblers often delivers excellent results.

Perch

The perch is the fish most people encounter first. This striped fighter is known for its tasty flesh and lively behaviour. Anyone who has experienced a calm summer evening with half-kilo perch hunting at the surface knows how unforgettable it is.

The best period for perch fishing runs from mid-June to September. A wide variety of baits can be used, including lures, small fish and worms. In autumn, when perch move to deeper water, boat fishing with jigs and shiny lures becomes very effective. Ice fishing for perch using jigs is also popular during winter.

Zander

Many anglers rank zander as one of the most exciting fish to catch. In addition, it is considered a true delicacy. Zander is somewhat mysterious, as it spends most of the year in deep water. In early summer, it moves into shallower areas to spawn. Local knowledge of these spawning grounds is essential, and in some lakes fishing for zander is prohibited during this period. It is best to fish just before or after the closed season.

As lake temperatures rise, zander becomes increasingly active. Warm summers usually provide excellent conditions. Night-time trolling with surface-running lures is a common and successful method. Jig fishing during spinning works well, and live bait such as small perch or bleak is effective for angling.

White fish

A wide range of white fish species can be found, including ide, bream, roach, crucian carp, tench and rudd. In some waters, even common carp are present. The season typically runs from late April to mid-October, with peak periods in early summer and early autumn.

Other fishing opportunities

In addition to the species mentioned above, there are several other interesting fishing options. Many smaller lakes are regularly stocked with rainbow trout and brown trout — so-called “put-and-take” waters. These lakes offer excellent chances of success and are ideal for family fishing. Both angling and spin fishing with small lures usually work well.

Other species anglers may encounter include common whitefish, burbot and eel. Whitefish and burbot are mainly caught through ice fishing, while eel fishing is best done at night during warm summer evenings using ledgering techniques.

License & Practical tips

Planning your fishing trip carefully is highly recommended. It is important to familiarize yourself with the regulations that apply to the waters you intend to fish. There are general rules for Värmland County, as well as specific regulations for individual lakes. In most cases, you should assume that a fishing permit is required.

In medium-sized and large lakes, fishing from a boat or canoe usually yields the best results.
